Professor of Cross-cultural Studies

Work Experience

 

Formerly Professor of UCLA and Cornell University in Comparative Arts and Literatures and Cross-cultural history, Yan Haiping is presently Professor of Cross-cultural Studies, the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Co-Director of Tsinghua-Michigan Society of Fellows, and the Director of the Institute for World Literatures and Cultures at Tsinghua University.

Research Interests

 

Twentieth century arts and literature, history of ideas, critical theory and cross-cultural studies

Publications

 

She has published numerous essays in and edited special issues of leading journals in her fields, authored as well as edited five single volume books. She is presently working on a series of projects including a book manuscript on Chinese cosmopolitanism and the rise of contemporary Chinese artistic culture forthcoming in both Chinese and English editions.

Academic Services

 

Yan is an invited seminar leader of Cornell School of Criticism and Theory (2006), and the Norman Freehling Professor at the Humanities Institute of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (2007-2008). She was the 2003-2008 Director of UCLA Center for US-China Arts and Media Studies, the 2008-2011 Director of Cornell Institute for Chinese Studies, and the 2009-2011 Founding Director of Cornell-ECNU Center for Comparative Humanities.

Honors & Awards

 

Yan’s accolades include China’s 1980-1981 First Prize for Excellence in Drama (the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize in the U.S.) for her ten-act historical play titled Li Shimin, Prince of Qin, CNN’s 1999 selection as one of “six most influential Chinese cultural figures” for her scholarly and creative works in English and Chinese, the 2011 Award for Global Talents by the Shanghai Municipal Government, a Standing Member of the National Committee in the field of International Languages and Literatures in the State Council of China since 2014, and Secretary general for the Secretariat of China-UK Association for the Humanities in Higher Education since 2016.
