The Many Facets of Kantian Freedom
Dr. Samuel HEIDEPRIEM and Dr. FAN Dahan

The concept of freedom has notoriously eluded easy definition. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work of German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). Kant famously created an ambitious philosophical system comprising theories of epistemology, morality, politics, aesthetics and more. In each of these areas, Kant formulates the meaning of freedom differently, from the categorical imperative to aesthetic free play. This presentation will introduce the major models of freedom as they appear in Kant’s philosophical system, in order to showcase the complexity of this difficult philosophical category while providing a survey of Kant’s rich and challenging body of work. This seminar is hosted by Dr.Liping WANG.
