Class of World Literatures and Cultures (Tsinghua Xuetang Class)

The Class of World Literatures and Cultures is an undergraduate English-language program co-founded by the Institute for World Literatures and Cultures and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Tsinghua University. Its aim is to inherit and develop Tsinghua University’s intellectual tradition of “connecting the East and the West, bridging the past and the present, and integrating the humanities and the sciences”. The program nurtures students with canons of world literature, teaches them about the world history of different civilizations, and guides them to explore the clashing, changing, and fusion of different national cultures, languages, and societies, so that they can inherit Chinese cultural traditions while making meaningful innovations, and grow to become the new generation of learned scholars who could contribute to the development of Chinese humanities academics in the international world.

English Language and Literature

The English Language and Literature undergraduate program aims to cultivate students’ multilingual consciousness and cross-cultural competence. Through student-centered and individualized instructions, students learn knowledge that spans from linguistics and literature to diverse fields in humanity and social sciences, including Chinese, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and cross-cultural studies, etc.

Japanese Language and Literature

The Japanese Language and Literature undergraduate program aims to develop top talents who possess solid Japanese language skills and profound understanding of Japanese culture, have excellent capability of working in fields of translation, education, commerce, management, and international cultural communications, etc. Japanese major program of Tsinghua University was initially established in 1970 under the guidance of late Prime Minister ZHOU Enlai.
